Start at the top edge
Look at any house after dark and the shape you recognize is the roofline. Nothing else on the house runs that far uninterrupted, and nothing else has the sky behind it. Light that line and the building reads as a shape rather than a dark mass. That is the reason the roofline gets the hardware, and why one line up there outperforms a dozen fixtures at ground level. One continuous line, mounted once, doing the most visible job on the property: that is the case for it.
What is up there
The system is an aluminum channel, color matched to the trim, carrying LEDs along the roof edge. The channel does two jobs at once: it holds the lights and it hides them. Because it matches the trim, you generally have to be told where it is.
Not every edge needs it
Every plan starts with the primary roof edge, and works outward. Gables, dormers, porch roofs, posts and upper runs are all candidates, though a good plan leaves some of them dark. Outline everything and the house reads flat, which is the most common way a roofline plan goes wrong. The run itself is worth looking at closely on a finished job, because
https://jsbin.com/hijeqevapu a straight line held over a long span is harder than it looks.
The noon test
A roofline system is on the house every day, lit or unlit. That is why the channel gets matched to your trim rather than sold in one color. Mount it tight to the edge, match the color, and route the wire out of sight, and the daytime house is unchanged.
One line, a lot of uses
After install the system runs from your phone. Plain white most nights, color when there is a reason, and a schedule that runs it without you. The setting that gets the most hours is almost always the plain one, which surprises people who bought it for the holidays.
What makes one roofline cost more than another
Two houses on the same street can be very different jobs. Linear feet is the first one, though it is rarely what separates two quotes. Every corner is another cut, another fitting and another decision. Two stories changes the job.
A question people ask early
The gutter comes up in almost every consultation. The channel fastens to the roof edge itself, rather than to gutter that flexes and fills. That distinction matters since a gutter is not a permanent mounting point, and anything fastened to one inherits its problems.
